What determines what team will start on what side in hockey?

Jen asked:
I know that hockey teams switch sides after each period, but is there a ryhme or reason to what side the home team (or visiting team) start on?

One side is the visitors side and one is the home side. The visitors score in the home teams side and the home team scores on the visitors side.

The net closest to the Home Team’s Players bench is where the home team starts the game.

your goalie is on the bench side for the 1st and 3rd period. The main point of that, is if you have to pull your goalie in the 3rd, he is closer to the bench.

Other than what’s already been said, no there is no rhyme or reason. The Home side is determined by the way the arena is set up and by the home team and it remains that way.
They usually set things up to give some kind of subtle advantage to the home team.
